Commemoration
Walter E. Baker Jr. dies in battle on July 14th, 1944; his father is notified of Walter's death on July 30th, 1944. On August 8th, 1946, Mr. Baker Sr. is given further information that his son is temporary buried in the U.S. Military Cementary Ste. Mere Eglise #2, Plot O, Row 5, Grave 83. On September 25th, 1947, Mr. Baker Sr. is given options for the burial of his son. His mother and father both reply on February 25th, 1949, that Walter E. Baker Jr. should be left permanently interred in the United States Military Cemetery in St. Laurent, France. His father received a letter on June 3rd, 1949, that confirmed Walter Baker Jr. burial at the St. Laurent U.S. Military Cemetery in Plot D, Row 18, Grave 17 with a white cross.
When Walter E. Baker Jr. died, he had a variety of items. His parents would be sent a locket, a medal, 2 knives, a ring, a wallet, photos, 5 shillings, and 1000 francs as well as a check for $21.19 on August 8, 1945. Other items would later be found belonging to Walter E. Baker Jr. including 3 ribbons, 1 ash tray, 1 buckle, 1 lighter, and 2 handkerchiefs. Two packages with Walter E. Baker Jr’s personal effects were sent on March 19th, 1945, and April 11th, 1945.
During and after his time serving in the Army. Walter E. Baker Jr. was awarded with a Silver Cross, Purple Heart, and French Croix de Guerre with Bronze Star.
